Brewing

The drink we call ‘coffee’ basically involves mixing roasted and ground coffee beans with water.  It may sound simple, but there are numerous ways in which coffee can be brewed, each resulting in a different flavour.  There are several basic factors that can affect the taste of the perfect cup of coffee:
  1. Type of coffee used
  2. Roast Degree
  3. Blend of Coffee
  4. Grind
  5. Water (type, amount, temperature)
  6. The equipment used
  7. The utensils used
There is no perfect way of brewing coffee. The “best” method is one that suits your personal taste and convenience.

Brewing Methods/ Equipments:

  Turkish Ibrik

Turkish Ibrik

This is a traditional, Arabian way of brewing coffee.  Use very finely ground coffee and put into the small brass jug, or ibrik.  Add sugar and water and bring to a boil.  When the brew has boiled, take it off the heat.  As it boils, the liquid rises up the neck of the ibrik, so make sure to not fill the water to the rim.  The brew is brought to a boil three times in all before being served.  Add cardamom, saffron or ginger to taste.

Jug / Carafe

Jug/ Carafe

This is a very simple method of brewing coffee without the hassles and difficulties of finding specific coffee brewing equipment.  It is a simple infusion method that is suitable for any blend of coffee, but is ideal for medium to course grinds.  Simply warm the carafe with warm water, then place coffee grinds into the jug.  Pour in just-boiled water and stir with a wooden spoon.  Wait 1 minute before straining the coffee into cups.

French Press/ Cafetiere/ Coffee Plunger

This method of making coffee helps to extract the full flavour from the coffee beans and is a very popular method of brewing coffee because of its ease of use.  To use, first warm the pot with hot water.  Place 1 spoonful of coarsely ground coffee into the pot and pour hot water (around 96○C) over the ground coffee, and stir with a spoon.  Allow to steep for 1 minute then carefully lower the mesh filter down the bottom of the pot to separate the grounds from the extracted coffee.  The coffee is now ready to be served.

          Vacuum Coffee Pot/ Percolator

Vacuum Coffee Pot/ Percolator

The vacuum pot or percolator was a device invented by Robert Napier in 1840.  It works on the principle of a globe, half filled with water, being placed over a heat source with dry coffee in the receiver above. The water is heated and the water enters the globe by means of a siphon in between the glass pot and the globe.

Manual/ One-Cup Filter Machines

Manual/ One-Cup Filter Machines

This method of brewing coffee is perhaps one of the cheapest, and most effective ways of brewing coffee.  It is extremely easy to maintain and easy to control, and the strength of the coffee is controlled by the amount of coffee grounds you put in. The only equipment necessary is a kettle to boil water, a filter cup (dripper), filter paper, and a coffee cup.

Simply place the filter paper into the filter cup (dripper) and place it on top of a preheated coffee mug or jug.  Brew water while placing ground coffee into the filter paper.  When the water boils, pour a small amount of water over the grounds to moisten the surface, then slowly pour the remainder of the water over the grounds in a circular motion until all the grounds are wet.  Allow the water to drip slowly into the coffee mug of jug. When the water has run through, the coffee is now ready to serve.

Electric Drip Machines

The convenient Automatic Drip brewing method is designed to take much of the guesswork out of making coffee. Simply by pouring cold water into a reservoir, the machine heats it to the correct temperature and pulses it through the ground coffee that rests in a filter.

If you want your coffeemaker to last, clean it regularly, using a solution that removes calcium and lime deposits from the inner tubing. Use a tablespoon of white vinegar with a pot of water, or commercial coffee machine cleaners.

           Espresso Machines

Espresso Machines

When it comes to coffee makers, there is nothing quite like buying an espresso coffee maker.  Espresso coffee makers have a wide range of prices and quality but they are generally guaranteed to produce a great cup of coffee.

Essentially, an espresso coffee maker is a device that brews coffee quickly.  The coffee brewed with an espresso machine has a distinct taste that has been proven to be irresistible to coffee lovers everywhere.  Espresso machines can create a number of specialty coffee beverages such as espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos.

To make an espresso, an espresso coffee machine forces hot water through finely ground, tightly packed coffee beans.  The process involves forcing hot water and steam through the coffee grounds. The steps to brewing an excellent cup of espresso are:

  1. Place water in the reservoir of the espresso machine.
  2. Depending on the type of espresso machine, either wait for the water within the machine's heating chamber to heat after turning the machine on or until the water has boiled.
  3. Place fine coffee grounds in the coffee holder and pack it down.
  4. With the pump contained on the espresso machine, the water will be drawn out of the reservoir and pumped into the heating chamber of the machine at a high pressure.

  5. Through this action, hot water is forced through the coffee grounds and out of the espresso machine into your cup.

With the espresso machine, you can also brew a nice cup of cappuccino by topping the drink with espresso steamed milk.  You can also make a sweet latte with an espresso machine, as a latte is essentially a blend of espresso and velvetized milk foam.

Automatic Brewing Machine

Automatic Brewing Machine

The modern day answer to the espresso machine is the Automatic Brewing Machine, which comes in all shapes and sizes.  Instead of having to manually make your cup of coffee, all you need to do is simply place a warmed, empty cup under the spout and push a button.  The Automatic Brewing Machine will grind, brew, and even steam your foam to make not just the perfect cup of espresso, but also a perfect cup of cappuccino, latte, or mocha, depending on your taste that day!  You can enjoy a perfect cup of coffee without needing the expertise of a barista!

If you want your automatic brewing machine to last, clean it regularly, using a solution or tablet that removes calcium and lime deposits from the inner tubing.
